Mentorship Overview
The Public Health Laboratory Science Fellowship and Internship Programs: An APHL-CDC Initiative seeks laboratory staff to mentor college students and recent graduates in public health laboratories to gain valuable early-career experience.
About Mentoring
APHL is always seeking host laboratories and mentors to host and support the Public Health Laboratory Science Fellowship and Internship Programs! Fellows and interns are matched with experienced mentors in host laboratories across the United States.
Mentors from APHL member or non-member laboratories are encouraged to apply as long as the mission of their laboratory supports public health initiatives.
If you are an experienced laboratory professional who would like to guide and direct a fellow or an intern through their journey in the Career Pathways program, we would encourage you to apply. Your contributions can help shape the next generations of public health laboratory professionals. Learn more.

Mentor applicants can choose from mentoring fellows, interns or genomic data interns. The main difference between mentoring fellows, interns or genomic data interns is the length of each program. Mentoring fellows and genomic data interns is a year-long commitment, whereas mentoring an intern is a 12-16-week commitment.
Otherwise, the criteria for hosting fellows or interns are the same.

The host laboratory and staff must demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality training experience and research opportunities for the fellow, in accordance with the program timeline. In addition to laboratory-specific work, fellows and interns will participate in training and learning activities to achieve proficiency in selecting public health laboratory core competencies.

Fellowship Project Supply Funding
Host laboratories (fellow mentors) can apply to receive a reimbursement per fellow for supplies and other consumables related to the hosted fellow’s project work.
Mentors can apply once their fellow is active in the program.
Project supply funds are contingent upon funding sources and availability, which may differ and fluctuate per fellow.
Please keep in mind, the reimbursable funds are meant to defray the cost of supplies and consumables associated with the hosted fellow’s project work and may not necessarily cover the entire cost of all supplies and consumables.
