STANDING SENTINEL

The Importance of Clinical Laboratories

Clinical facilities, such as hospitals, and the first responder communities are often the first to identify possible infectious disease threats when they care for ill patients. It is essential that clinicians are prepared to quickly, safely and competently collect specimens, and clinical laboratories are able to rule them out as threats or refer them to a public health laboratory for further testing. Strengthening connections between public health and clinical laboratories to enhances national preparedness, communication and response to infectious disease threats.

Sentinel Laboratory Training Tools

The Biothreat Sentinel Laboratory Training Toolbox contains essential resources for conducting biothreat training and outreach with sentinel laboratories.

APHL Support of Clinical Partnerships and Outreach

APHL’s Clinical Laboratory Partnerships and Outreach program Through the Clinical Laboratory Partnerships and Outreach Subcommittee, APHL collaborates with our members, CDC, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) to provide timely guidance, lead laboratory preparedness exercises that assess and improve laboratory readiness, and maintain the ASM Sentinel Level Clinical Laboratory Guidelines for identifying potential biothreat agents.

APHL also engages subject matter experts to develop clinical laboratory preparedness and response workshops, fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing and practical training. By maintaining strong relationships and facilitating open communication across the public health and clinical laboratory communities, APHL advances an integrated laboratory system that safeguards public health.
