Welcome, Mentors

Thank you for your commitment to the Career Pathways in Laboratory Science Internship Program! We appreciate your dedication to APHL and to the interns. Your contribution defines the program and contributes to their leadership and professional development in more ways than one. In the dropdowns below, you can find resources that may be beneficial during your time as a mentor. As always, the internship team is here to provide assistance when you need it.

Reports and Forms

Plan of Action

Interns and mentors, together, are expected to fill out a Plan of Action form at the start of the internship. The Plan of Action is due within 30 days of the intern's start date.

Monthly Report

Each month, you will be asked to complete a monthly report. The monthly report is NOW AUTOMATED. You will receive a link directly to the form in your email. If you use the old link, you will continue receiving email reminders to complete the form. Please delete all previous bookmarks. This is due by the 7th of the following month. For example, if your intern worked in July, a report is due August 7 to review July progress. You will complete a form for this report each month.

Mentor Orientation

Intern Mentors are required to attend an orientation session with our team. In this meeting, we will go over action items, program expectations, extensions, and any questions you may have. Please schedule the intern mentor orientation prior to your intern starting. Visit our Bookings Link and select "Mentor Orientation" from the options.

Procedures

If you would like to offer an extension to your current intern, discuss the following prior to their end-date:

  • Their new hours per month (must be at least 10 hours per week), their course load/schedule.
  • A new end date (must be the 15th or last day of the month).

Once you have discussed these items with the intern, please complete these items at least 25 days before the intern's original end date:

  • Email [email protected] requesting the Extension Form. We need mentors to email us directly so interns cannot extend their contracts without the mentor's permission.

Upon submission of the Extension Form, the internships team will submit a contract amendment and the intern will be all set to continue working in your laboratory.

Do you have an intern currently that would like to increase or decrease their hours?

Please follow these steps:

  • Determine what new monthly bucket the intern will be in. Please keep in mind that they will need to meet the minimum of each bucket every month for the duration of the program.

Internship Program

Interns can work a minimum of 6 hours a week and a maximum of 20, depending on the mentor's availability and the intern's class schedule.

Here are the brackets:

Upon submission of the Change In Hours Form, the internships team will submit a contract amendment to update the intern's monthly hours. The intern will receive confirmation of this.

Communications and Communities

Share Your Social Media Info
  • Share about and highlight your Interns(s) by filling out this form.

That could be in the laboratory working hard or outside enjoying the company of your colleagues. APHL will use some of the pictures for promotional materials and social media. Any photos that represent your experience are welcome! Upload the files directly using this Dropbox link. You can find some photo guidelines and tips and the authorization form here
