Our Purpose

About the Committee

Committee Charge

The Newborn Screening (NBS) Committee serves to advise the Board and the Association on matters regarding newborn screening as they relate to issues affecting the membership. Membership is open to all members having interest in newborn screening. 

Priorities

  • Monitor and evaluate trends, policies, etc. that affect NBS programs 
  • Guide activities, education and training of the NBS community to address identified needs and priorities 
  • Identify methods to retain institutional knowledge within NBS programs

Projects and Work Products

Current Projects

The Committee is currently working on: 

  • NBS Contingency Plan position statement renewal 
  • Development of NBS positions and knowledge retention questions for the Knowledge Retention Toolkit 
  • Identify a mechanism to continue to sustain the recommended uniform screening panel (RUSP) in the absence of historical review infrastructure 
  • Collaboration with the Ethical, Legal, Social, and Policy Issues Subcommittee to review and/or update fact sheet on Adding Conditions to State NBS panels and pamphlet on Four Facts Policymakers Need to Know
